Some of our Korean modules will follow the blended learning approach (half face to face at Penrhyn Road and the other half online via MS Teams), whilst others will be delivered fully online via MS Teams or face to face (in the classroom). Please check individual language module for details

At the end of each semester long module, there will be two in-class assessments: Reading & Writing and an Oral Assessment.

Please note: KLS assessments cannot be re-scheduled.

Please also note: a minimum of 10 students is required in order for a course to run. Should any course not recruit enough students, it will be cancelled.

Korean courses offered

Korean Level 1

This course is for absolute beginners. It aims to give students a basic knowledge of reading, listening, spoken and written skills in a dynamic and communicative way, through individual, pair and group work and studio-based and authentic texts. The focus is on accuracy as well as communication.

Method of delivery: There are two groups in Level 1: Group One will be delivered entirely online (real-time interactive virtual classes via MS Teams) and Group Two will be taught face to face at Penrhyn Road.

  • Level 1 module is offered in October and January

Korean Level 2

This module is designed to provide near-beginners with the foreign language skills to enable them to interact satisfactorily in survival situations and social encounters in the foreign country and to be aware of related aspects of the foreign culture and environment.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 1 or three months' prior language learning
  • Level 2 module is offered in October and January
  • Method of delivery: Face to face (in the classroom)
  • Timetable for October 2023 course: Wednesdays 6-8pm

Korean Level 3

This course is designed to develop the language competency already acquired by students. It focuses on developing the levels of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Students will improve and consolidate the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired previously. The module also engages with aspects of the language's culture and society as it aims to provide students with a wider context for language learning.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 2 or six months' prior language learning
  • Level 3 module is offered in October and January
  • Method of delivery: Face to face (in the classroom)
  • Timetable for October 2023 course: Tuesdays 6-8pm
  • Timetable for January 2024 course: To be confirmed

Korean Level 4

This module is designed to reactivate and build on a student's previous knowledge of the language, to equip students with further linguistic skills to enable them to communicate in a number of familiar work and social situations and respond accordingly, and to broaden a student's awareness of aspects of the foreign culture.

It focuses on developing the levels of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Students will improve and consolidate the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary acquired previously.

  • Entry requirements: Completion of Level 3, one year's prior language learning or equivalent of level A1 of CEFR
  • Level 4 module is offered in January 2024
  • Method of delivery: Blended learning (half face to face and half online via MS Teams)

Teaching Block 1 (semester 1):

  • Week commencing 9 October 2023 to week commencing 11 December 2023 (10 weeks).

Teaching Block 2 (semester 2):

  • Week commencing 22 January 2024 to week commencing 25 March 2024 (10 weeks).

Course fees

  • Kingston University students: free. (You will be required to purchase the coursebook at time of enrolment £10.00).
  • Members of the public: £225 per semester or £420 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University alumni: £210 per semester or £400 for two semesters.
  • Kingston University staff: £90 per semester (price includes digital course book).
