Dr Nigel Page

About

With over thirty years of experience including 15 years gained in positions of senior responsibility I have made prominent contributions to the advancement of the molecular biosciences in both teaching and research. I initially studied Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) at Reading before completing my doctorate within the Department of Zoology. I have subsequently spent most of my career employed within academia except for a short period at the Babraham Institute. My technical background has been predominantly in the identification of novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets where I have published over 100 articles including research, review, book chapters, conference proceedings and two patents.

I am the Director of Learning and Teaching, an Associate Professor and have been Course Leader for Biochemistry/Medical Biochemistry within the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy & Chemistry at Kingston University London. My current role involves providing substantive leadership, strategic direction and oversight of learning, teaching, assessment and the student experience. I also have played a key role within my institution ensuring compliance with regulatory processes including writing and making policy decisions. In the wider scientific community along with being actively involved in a range of scientific outreach activities to promote the biological sciences, I sit on the editorial board of several journals, and am actively involved with a number of professional societies (including the Royal Society of Biology, Biochemical Society, Society for Endocrinology and Zoological Society of London).

I am recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Chartered Biologist (CBiol) and Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach). I have been awarded Kingston University's Provost's Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence along with recognition through several other university awards highlighting my sustained contribution to employability, enterprise, professional development, and the inclusive curriculum. Nationally, I have been a finalist in both the National Enterprise Educator Awards (highly commended) and the Pearson HE Innovate Awards (Most innovative approach to developing employability skills).

Research

My scientific research background has been predominantly in the identification of novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets where I have published nearly 100 articles including research, review, book chapters, conference proceedings and two patents. Major scientific discoveries include the identification of an association of neurokinin B (NKB) with pre-eclampsia, the endokinins (novel tachykinins), the six members of the apolipoprotein L (apoL) protein family and splice variants of pregnancy associated plasma protein-E (PAPP-E).

I am also involved in a range of projects conducting pedagogic research including those involving student experience, progression metrics, awarding gaps, understanding commuting students, the inclusive curriculum, personal tutoring, and professional development.
