About

Dr Purva Tavri is a Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Waste Manager, an Associate Fellow of Higher Education Academy, Environmental Planner & Architect, with over 15 years of experience in sustainability and waste management.

She is a Centre Councillor in the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) London & Southeast Centre and a Steering Committee Member of the Island Waste Management Global Alliance.

Purva is a trained researcher with her doctoral research on exploring how organisations adopt reuse behaviour in practice. She has also received awards from CIWM, International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and Inspiring Indian Women (IIW) for her publications. She has been nominated by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group as one of the influential women in the industry.

Purva aims to achieve longevity by bringing individuals and organisations to a self-sustainable level and always aims to combine research and practice for a better environment and well-being in society.

Teaching and learning:

      • Led on developing relationships with professionals to come for guest talks for GG7045. The pool of professionals consists of alumni, the private sector, the public sector, and SMEs. Bringing theory and practice together in the class-room.
      • Coordinated with CIWM on getting free places for a site visit to an Energy to Waste Plant in London for a couple of MSc students.

Research/funding projects:

      •  MSc supervision projects are based on collaboration with businesses, charities, and other institutions and are real-life-based projects. One of the projects is a UKRI-funded project led by Middlesex University.
      • The first supervisor of a BSc project in collaboration with RBK
      • Interdisciplinary research dissertation - coordinated and introduced an MSc student with colleagues at KSA for the potential research project.
      • Leading on developing a long-term impactful project in collaboration with the 'KU community'. Very early stages.

Other KTPs:

      • Planning and preparation to represent a KTPs (public and private sector) in Festival of Research and Innovation.
      • Planning and coordinating with regional and local government partners to showcase in a workshop that is being planned for SMEs to be delivered in June 2023.

Collaboration and resourceful practices:

Led on creating summer workshop project of a group of 5 DAs in collaboration with the Sustainability Lead in operations on a real-life issue at KU. The project outcome:

    • Recommendations formed part of the decision-making process.
    • Published a white paper in a commercial journal by the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) reflecting on the project.
    • Planning on submitting an abstract with the Sustainability Lead as co-author at International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) Conference 2023.

Led on creating a real-life practice-based assignment for the GG7045 module by collaborating with the Royal Borough of Kingston (RBK). The assignment will give an opportunity to the students to conduct the environmental performance of some of the local organisations/businesses in Kingston. The proposed outcomes:

    • The best report to be shared with RBK and organisations that formed part of the study.
    • Students will gain transferable skills in addition to course-specific knowledge and experience.

Degree Apprenticeship (DA):

Appointed as an Interim DA Programme Leader:

      • Collaborated with Degree Apprentices (DAs) lead in CE and led on planning and delivery of GGE DAs admissions.
      • Coordinated with GGE colleagues and led the planning and delivery of DAs summer workshops.
      • Successfully led on conducting tripartite meetings and developed post-tripartite feedback report in Padlet and shared as part of the handover.
