I am a neuroscientist and my current research interests are linked to mental imagery, vision, affective and cognitive processing, and empirical aesthetics.
I have PhDs in Biological Cybernetics (Germany) and Neuroscience (Brazil). I have joined Kingston in 2006, after working as a postdoctoral researcher at Nottingham, Open, City, and Royal Holloway universities (UK).
My early studies in comparative vision were funded by the CNPq and FAPESP. They uncovered a unique form of extraocular photoreception in ants and beetles. I then investigated the effect of volatile anaesthetics on ion channels in neural cells, and later examined long-range interactions in the visual thalamus. Those studies were funded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Wellcome Trust, BBSRC and the Royal Society. My studies on perception (motion and spatial vision) were supported by EPSRC and EU2020 Marie Sklodowska Currie grants. My recent studies focus on affective responses to the environment and the role of mental imagery in empirical aesthetics. At the clinical level, I am interested on how emotions, perception, and aesthetic experiences are affected by neurocognitive and physical constraints (e.g., muscular dystrophy, dementia).
Associate professor in Neurocognition & Aesthetics
I teach at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels on topics linked to vision, perception, neuroscience, cognition, evolution, and the psychology of art.
