About

I have taught at Kingston School of Art since 2010 and have led MArch Unit 6 with Timothy Smith since 2013.

I combine my academic role with the practice of architecture as co-partner of Timothy Smith & Jonathan Taylor Architects. Alongside these complementary professional and academic roles, my research interest centres around the use of classical language in contemporary architecture.

The practice was recently featured in the Architecture Foundation's publication 'New Architects 3', the definitive survey of the best practices formed in the last 10 years. Projects by the practice have been shortlisted for the Brick Awards, AJ Small Projects competition and for an RIBA Yorkshire Award. The practice has given lectures concerning its work in Zürich, Sweden, London and Brighton.

Before establishing Smith & Taylor, I studied in Scotland and Denmark, and worked for practices in Edinburgh, London and Blantyre (Malawi).

Research

I am interested in the study and application of the classical language of architecture.

Previous research interests have included the analysis of the experience of early white settlers in the area European powers then called British Central Africa and the expression of this experience in correspondence, literature, photography and landscape painting; the nature and analysis of the architecture of empire; and the ability of architecture to carry meaning.
