Professor Alistair Payne

About

I am the Head of the School of Arts in Kingston School of Art, Kingston University. I lead the renowned portfolio of the following four creative departments: Architecture and Landscape, Fine Art, Film and Photography, Performing Arts (Music, Dance and Drama).

As an artist, theorist and educator, my research interests span fine art practices including painting, film and installation, with a focus upon interdisciplinary practices emanating from painting. I have written extensively and published on the notion of the virtual and its impacts upon contemporary art practice, as well as new philosophical positions for contemporary critical theory in the field of art. Alongside this practice-based research, I am deeply engaged in understanding and proposing new models of pedagogical practice within and across creative disciplines. 

These interests coalesce through Artistic Research and the current debates around practice-led methods of research that can create forms of embodied knowledge within and through practice. 

I have exhibited my work throughout the UK, Europe, US and China. The painting, ‘(D)welling', was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize, 2018. 

I hold a PhD (practice-led) from Chelsea College of Art and Design, UAL, an MFA from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and a BA(Hons) Fine Art degree from the University of Hertfordshire.

I have supervised five PhD projects to completion and examined a further eight PhD's and one MPhil submission across the UK. I would be interested in discussing potential future student projects with a focus upon one or more of the following areas; contemporary painting, painting in the expanded field, film/moving image based work, the virtual and philosophy, architectural theory and interdisciplinary practices and installation-based practices.
