About

I joined Kingston School of Art in 2021 as a Senior Lecturer on the BA Filmmaking degree.

As a cinematographer and filmmaker, I have been involved with several independent feature films and numerous short projects with a focus on creative fiction and artist's moving image work. My previous films include commissions from Creative England, Channel 4, Film London and have screened at major film festivals such as BFI London, Edinburgh, Palm Springs and IDFA.

My main areas of teaching and research are cinematography and film aesthetics. I am the author of a short book Towards a Philosophy of Cinematography (2021) and my writing has been published in the Journal of Artistic Research, the Journal of Media Practice and Alphaville Journal of Film and Screen Media. I am also an associate editor of Screenworks, an online practice-research publication.

Before joining Kingston, I was Course Leader for the undergraduate filmmaking degree at Nottingham Trent University. Prior to this, I taught in the School of Cinema at San Francisco State University for three years. I have also worked as a visiting lecturer at the Paris College of Art, University for the Creative Arts and Ravensbourne University London.

Research

My research focuses on cinematography and film aesthetics. Connecting the theory and practice of cinematography and developing the sub-field of film studies that directly addresses this discipline is the fundamental ambition motivating my work.

As an active practitioner, my cinematography concentrates on creative and artistic projects, revolving around several longstanding collaborations with international filmmakers. In conjunction with this I publish writing that draws upon my filmmaking experiences, aiming to understand research findings systematically from intuitive, collaborative and occasionally chaotic production processes. In so doing, I seek new understandings that recognise the creative contribution of the cinematographer and forge a pathway for further development of practice-based research methods.

These pursuits, and specifically the mutual interaction and reinforcement between practical activity and theoretical investigation, also coincide with my role as associate editor of the peer-review journal Screenworks which publishes practice-research in screen media.
