Dr Paul Micklethwaite

About

I am an educator, researcher and practitioner in design for social innovation and sustainability.

I explore the impact of the sustainability agenda on our theories and practices of design, and modes of design practice which are explicitly social and take design into new territories. My PhD asked 'What is design?' - a question I continue to explore, specifically in relation to concerns of ecological and social sustainability.

My books are the influential course reader Design for Sustainable Change (AVA Academia, 2011), and the monograph Beyond Recycling (Routledge, 2021). I am a highly experienced doctoral supervisor and examiner, and have been external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses across a broad range of design disciplines.

I have good experience of knowledge transfer and business development for sustainable design. Collaborators include Design Council, D&AD, Surrey County Council, PTI Education, London Remade.

I have been course leader of MA Sustainable Design since 2011. This is a pioneering and internationally leading practice-based master's course for designers of all disciplines. I have led other courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including BA Design Studies, Graduate Diploma Creative Practice and MA Professional Practice (Design) – a masters by learning agreement.
