Research

My research focuses on Gothic fiction (including film and media) and its changing cultural and historical contexts from the eighteenth century to the present. Using a variety of theoretically-informed approaches, my writings have examined  the uncanny, terror, horror, phantasms, otherness and ghosts in literature and culture, exploring generic boundaries with romance, science fiction, fantastic weird and horror modes.

My current projects engage with diverse aspects of Gothic and genre fiction, examining forms of monstrosity in literature and culture from the first Gothic novel (The Castle of Otranto) to recent popular examples such as zombies, vampires, killers and new adaptations of Frankenstein. Concerned with matters of genre and metaphor, recent papers and articles I have written also examine the frameworks through which figures of horror are produced and understood in culture and media, considering models of fantasy, abjection and base materialism as ways of grasping the significance, effects and affect of monsters.
